What if there's uncertainty in the market?

It’s completely normal for the value of your investments to rise and fall over time. These changes don’t mean you’ve “lost” money; they simply reflect how investments behave day‑to‑day.

Short‑term changes don’t define long‑term outcomes

Market movements can feel unsettling, especially when you’re looking at your statement in black and white. But unless you’re planning to withdraw money right now, these changes are simply part of the natural investment journey.

You only ‘lock in’ a loss if you withdraw at the wrong time

An ISA value that has dipped on the day your statement was produced is just a snapshot. If you stay invested, your plan has the chance to benefit when markets recover - something they have historically done again and again.

Stay focused on long-term goals

A significant factor in investing success is time spent in the market, not reacting quickly to short-term changes. Staying focused on your long-term goals can give your money the best chance to grow.

Stock market investments can go down as well as up, and you could get back less than you invest. Capital at risk.

Understanding market volatility

We’ve put together a short explainer video that breaks down market volatility in simple terms, and could help you understand what it really means when the market moves.
