Target date funds
Target date funds are designed for people who expect to retire or start taking money from their pension within a particular five-year period.
Each fund has a target date associated with that retirement period. As the target date gets closer, the fund's investment strategy automatically adjusts over time.
This information is for general guidance only and does not constitute personal financial advice. Current legislation and your personal circumstances may change.
How do target date funds work?
When retirement is many years away, target date funds may invest more heavily in assets with the potential for higher long-term growth, such as company shares.
Around 20 years before the target date, the fund gradually starts moving some investments into assets that are generally considered lower risk. This aims to reduce exposure to large fluctuations in value as retirement approaches.
These changes happen automatically, so you do not need to actively adjust the fund's investment mix over time.

Things to consider
Target date funds are designed around a specific retirement date.
The investment mix changes automatically over time.
As the target date approaches, the fund may move towards investments that are generally considered lower risk.
If your retirement plans change, you may wish to review whether your selected target date remains appropriate for your circumstances.
The value of investments can go down as well as up, so you could get back less than you paid in.
You may get back less than has been paid into your pension.
Important Information
Past performance is not a guide to future performance.
Target date funds aim to adjust investment risk over time, but investment returns are not guaranteed.
Moving towards investments that are generally considered lower risk does not remove investment risk.
The target date does not guarantee a particular retirement outcome or pension value.
